Who is Sally Sossa and Why You Should You Know Her Name | 1824 Q+A Series

A couple weeks back, I had a chance to chop it up with rising star Sally Sossa. I got to pick her brain a little during a press conference hosted by 1824, as well as sit and listen to many questions other publications had to ask Ms. Sossa. Now, going in I didn’t know what to expect but after checking out some of her work and hearing what she had to offer to the game, I can see the appeal.

She uses her pain and experiences as a guide for her music and you can hear it on tracks like “It Ain’t Love” and “Need Me” off her album Life of Sossa. It was a no-brainer for Durk to come through on her track "Star Song" and drop a healthy feature, one that seamlessly accompanies her own unique sound.

Growing up in Houston, Texas with her family where daily rap battles were always a thing, you can say she has been destined for this since a kid. We got to understand her process when it comes to making music and writing. She’s very keen on her alone time, snacks, and good bud to keep the sessions rolling.

We got a taste of a new track coming from her entitled; “Zodiac Signs” where she talks about all the different signs and their personalities. It was a very creative song and I couldn’t think of any other artist doing that right now. You can tell she had fun with it. She enjoyed telling us about the backstory, smiling VERY big when explaining that to us; it was genuine to see an artist connecting on that level with fans and newcomers to her music!

I got some solid Q+A time --admittedly very NERVE RACKING-- but she was quick to make me feel at home and very much at ease as we breezed through our questions.

Who is Sally Sossa and what does SHE represent?

Sally is a sweet, loving, and humble person as to Sossa she’s a vicious, hungry monster; I’m two in one. What do I represent? I represent strength, empowerment, being you freely, and not worrying about what the world may think of you.

What were the rap battles like at home?

I USED TO KILL THEM IN THOSE BATTLES; They couldn’t see me in those rap battles. I didn’t know how hard I was in those battles until I was like 7. Started having battles when I was 5.

She went into detail on what her biggest battle was and she harped on the one with her homegirls and her older brother where it was a battle until the very end; she obviously came out on top.

"Baby sis beating out Big Bro at just 11 years old."

Houston has been recognized as a cultural hub for decades now, how does being from Houston influence you?

Being from Houston has impacted me in a big way, being that I have ties down south as well as up north. Being from Houston, Texas has grounded me to my gritty side and just overall made me achieve that drive. That hustler's ambition. When you walk outside nobody is just going to give you a hundred dollars. You gotta work for that hundred. Being from Houston people aren’t going to see that you’re HERE, You gotta prove it.

Sally Sossa is definitely someone you need to tap in with and explore her soul as she is not afraid to bare it out on every single track. Her most recent 10-track EP, 4EVER SOSSA, was released on March 25th featuring stand-out tracks like "Number One," "Zodiac Signs," and "Toot it Up" (ft. Flo Milli). The sophomore project highlights Sossa's range as both a highly talented rapper and soothing, melodic singer, proving to the doubters that Sossa is here to stay 4EEVER. After getting a chance to talk to her about her upbringing and how much Houston means to her, you can see that it was a direct influence to her most recent album. Seeing her unmatched confidence and infectious charisma firsthand, it's easy to tell that Sossa is a star of the future. If you didn't know that already do yourself a favor and stream her latest project immediately and watch this Houston native rise to the Number One spot 🤩.
